Dinagyang Opening Salvo Today

THE public will have a good preview today, Jan. 8, 2016, of the Iloilo Dinagyang Ati-atihan contest on Jan. 24.

The 10 competing tribes will take to the streets to show off their costumes and part of their final performances on competition day.

The tribes are expected to perform their best with prizes at stake for Best in Performance, Best in Costume, Best in Discipline and Overall performance.

The parade of tribes starts 3 p.m. in a carousel format with the 10 tribes divided into the five performance areas.

Tribu Ilonganon and Tribu Salognon will start off from Freedom Grandstand area; Tribu Dagatnon and Paghidaet at Ma. Clara; Tribu Baybayanon and Tribu Panayanon at Quezon-Ledesma; Tribu Pan-ay and Tribu Buntagala at Mabini-Delgado; and Tribu Atub-atub and Tribu Obrero at the Iloilo Capitol area.

After completing the parade, the tribes will then converge at the Freedom Grandstand for the launching ceremonies.

Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Congressman Jerry Treñas will deliver their messages and officially open the festival.

Expect heavy traffic in the fringes of City Proper districts as streets leading to the downtown area will be closed starting 1 p.m.

Dinagyang Food Aid Feeds 6,245 Kids
ILOILO CITY – Some 6,245 children will be benefited from Food Aid Program implemented by the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) and Philippine Red Cross Iloilo Chapter starting Jan. 7.
The first set of beneficiaries from Feliciana Java Kelly Elementary School and Navais-Borres Elementary School were fed with miswa soup, bread and milk, according to PRC Iloilo Administrator Gilbert Paul Valderrama.
The next feeding activity will be at Iloilo River Plains Integrated School and TCT-Ana Ros Foundation Elementary School on Jan. 12; Uswag San Isidro Elementary School and Judith Lazarriaga Tiongco Elementary School on Jan. 14; and Severo Abeto Elementary School and A. Mirasol Elementary School onJan. 19.
Meanwhile, a total of 1,000 recipients will be catered during the Dinagyang Medical Mission at Calumpang including the fire victims at Baluarte and Calaparan on Jan. 9 and La Paz Gym on Jan. 16. (JVFernandez/Iloilo City PIO)

A 22-year-old medical student from Iloilo Doctor’s College, Ariane Gabriela, was crowned Miss Iloilo Dinagyang 2015 Wednesday night, January 21.

Gabriela bested nine other candidates during the coronation night at the University of San Agustin (USA) Gymnasium, Iloilo City.

She also bagged several minor and major awards such as Best in Interview, Best in Talent and Ms. Rebisco.

Named 1st runner-up was Vyel Marie Brodit 20, economics student of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV).

Meanwhile, Zairah Marie Agsaluna was adjudged 2nd runner-up and won Best in Evening Gown, Best in Swim Wear, Best in Festival Costume, Ms. Sophie Paris and Ms. YSA Skin Care and Body Expert.

Miss Universe 2010 fourth runner-up Venus Raj was one of the hosts.

Ten Western Visayas major festivals will showcase their wares in the Kasadyahan Regional Cultural Competition 2015 on Jan. 24.
Local Government Units, schools and other institutions/organizations will bring in the best festivals in their own locality.
The tribe/contingent is composed of minimum of 50 and maximum of 70 dancers/performers; minimum of 20 costumed props men; and maximum of 30 instrumentalists.
The dance presentation depicts a festival of a locality or local culture, customs and traditions of the region. It also features environmental awareness/protection and cultural practices.
Dance movements and costumes suit the concept to the tune of live or taped/recorded music.
Each competing group carries the “theme” of its local festival clearly shown and expressed in the storyline.

Drum and Bugle/Lyre (Glockenspiel) Contests on January 23, 2015 from 800 A.M. – 1200 Noon. Assembly area is at the Provincial Capitol from 7:00 A.M. going to Freedom Grandstand in parade formation. Contest shall be performed at Freedom Grandstand.

1. The contest is open to all public and private elementary and secondary schools in the City of Iloilo. Schools outside the Division of Iloilo City are invited to join on a First Come, First Serve basis.

2. Membership should not be more than one hundred (100) bonafide pupils/students duly certified by the school head, Drum and Lyre is the competition for elementary level while Drum, Lyre and Bugle for secondary level.

3. Musical instruments that are allowed to be used shall be limited to any form of drums and mallet. Cowbell, cymbals can be used by the group. Mallet instruments should be carried either vertically or horizontally and only the carrier of each respective instrument should play such instruments. Recorders may be used by Elementary groups.

4. Drums should not be suspended or propelled on any form of wheel carriage, sled, etc. other than the customary way.

5. Sticks, beaters or mallets should be used. Only one (1) instrument can be used or played by the participant.

6. Singing, chanting, talking or shouting either in unison or individually while in competition is not permitted except for the drum major or leader issuing orders or instructions to the unit.

7. All members of the corps should do the drill or formation and not the majorettes alone.

8. Contestants are required to perform two (2) pieces, an Ilonggo Folksong which should be the first to be performed, and a free choice medley composition.

9. Performance time is ten (10) minutes for every participant including entrance and exit. Five (5) points will be deducted from the total points for every minute in overtime performance.

10. The ranking system should be used in determining the winner and the decision of the Board of Judges is final and irrevocable.

11. The following are the criteria to be used in judging the drum and lyre (glockenspiel), bugle contest.
