The Ati Tribes Competition is the main event of the Dinagyang Festival. It is a grand cultural performance on the fourth Sunday of January. The competing tribes which include the warrior-dancers are all smeared with dark brown body-paint to present a tableau of folkloric scenarios through choreographed formations, elaborate props and remarkable costumes as they dance to their chanting, loud drum-beats and indigenous musical instruments.

The culmination of each presentation is focused on the theme of the people’s triumph and community empowerment where peace and prosperity thrive.

Iloilo Dinagyang Festival has received various awards in the country and special citations from international organizations. It is a Hall of Fame awardee of the Association of Tourism Officers in the Philippines as Best Tourism Event for three consecutive years. It is also one of Iloilo City’s anchor for its rapid economic development. Iloilo Dinagyang Festival is the first festival in the world to get the support of the United Nations for the promotion of the Millennium Development Goals, and cited by the Asian Development Bank as Best Practice on government, private sector & NGO cooperatives.
